No Really... I Insist.
Last night a DJ saved my life. No wait, that was another night. Last night I was at Park Lane volunteering/watching movies again, as we do. On the movie menu was Jam (documentary about the roller derby) and A Love To Hide (Gay German Don'tTakeAwayMyMan&ThrowHimInAConcentrationCamp).
The gays were out in full force to see A Love To Hide. For a movie recap go to www.rayofdelight.com (I'm not about to re-invent the wheel) The movie was well done, but it was NOT the feel-good movie of the year. :( Thank God it's 2006. The crowd mainly consisted of older guys. As I sat through the movie I thought about how much has changed for us now. Most of this has been for the better, but we still have a long way to go. I will say though, living as a gay man in nazi Germany would have seriously killed my buzz.
On the other hand, being a big 'mo during the holocaust would have had it's advantages as well. For one, during this time I doubt that the homos concerned themselves with needless gossip or tried to get themselves involved in situations that don't concern them. They were more concerned with hiding their lives from the general public and keeping a low profile.
Long distance communication required a significant amount of effort during that time. You basically had to pass messages on verbally, as mail service and telephones were not readily available to most. If you wanted to send someone a "man, I love you" or "let's see other people. I'm over it." message you would need the help of many others along the way to ensure it's delivery. So, to make sure the message wasn't lost along the way you would need to feel that it fell into trustworthy hands. You certainly wouldn't want someone to skew it's meaning and have someone change the intent as it was passed along the way. This is likely where the phrase "keep it simple stupid" came about. Keeping your message short and simple minimizes the risk of being lost in translation.... Whether it was travelling down the street or across the continent it needed to be simple, like this:
"Mind your own fucking business. None of it concerns you!"
It's hard to skew the meaning of this one.
